EP 85:An Equine Business Owner Takes a Leap of Faith

I love night check! Night check is like, my thing to do. That’s my time to go into the barn, take a look at everybody, and make sure they all have what they need.

– Heather Schneider, Wind Chase Farm

When Heather Schneider realized that she had been running her horse business in survival mode for longer than she cared to admit, she knew it was time for a change.

From buying a new tractor to hiring a  barn manager, Heather’s carriage driving business in Florida (and her life) have really turned around. In this episode, Helena talks with Heather about what changes she made at Wind Chase Farm, why she made them, and what the outcome has been. Listen in!

Load Trail Logo

This episode is brought to you by Load Trail Trailers

I thought it was what I always wanted, but then when I lived it, I realized it was a lot of work.

– Dr. Wendy Ying

This is part three of the HRN Host Series on Stall and Stable. The saying goes, “If you ask 10 different horse people how to do something, you’ll get 10 different answers.” Helena puts that adage to the test by asking her Horse Radio Network colleagues what they think qualifies as happy horse keeping. In this episode, Helena sits down with Dr. Wendy Ying, host of the Driving Radio Show and the owner of Five Elements for Animals, a holistic veterinary practice based in Sarasota Florida. Dr. Ying is one of the brightest minds and voices in modern veterinary science. Our conversation about how she keeps her horses happy and healthy in sunny Florida will make you feel like we’re all in the same room, sipping cocktails and comparing notes. Listen in!

Piper Klemm

In this second episode in our special HRN Host Series, Helena welcomes Piper Klemm, publisher of The Plaid Horse Magazine.

Piper didn’t start out her career in horses the way many equestrians do. She received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, but just two years later, she started The Plaid Horse magazine, and since then it’s been a whirlwind of passion, ponies, and podcasts. In addition to her work at the helm of her equestrian media empire, Piper is an active member of the hunter/jumper community, owning a fleet of lease ponies, and showing her own horse in adult hunter divisions. Piper’s goal is for everyone to become as educated about horsemanship and hunter/jumper sports as possible.

In this episode, Helena chats with Piper to talk about how she keeps her lease ponies safe and happy while doing their jobs in various homes throughout the U.S. Listen in!

This episode is brought to you by: Load Trail Trailers. American-made dump and utility trailers that make barn life easier.

The saying goes: “If you ask ten different horse people how to do something, you will get 10 different answers.” Well, Helena decided to put that adage to the test and ask ten different horse people their opinions about what qualifies for happy horse keeping.

The ten people happen to be her Horse Radio Network colleagues–all horse professionals in some way shape or form, and all with a similar horse-first philosophy when it comes to keeping, training, and competing their horses.

And while each episode in this series aims to address the same set of questions, the conversations go in their own directions. That’s what makes horse people so fun to talk to; you never know quite where the discussion will lead, so listen in!

EP 81: Modular Monitor Barns

This episode is brought to you by:
Lucas Equine Equipment and Tangent Materials

Time is money. This simple truth makes companies like Horizon Structures a real gem in the barn-building industry, because modular barn construction can save us both. Modular barns are built off-site, then delivered in components (modules) to your property. This process makes the build time much faster than traditional construction. And because the modules are built in an indoor space where things like weather delays, awkward geography, and availability of materials are not an issue, the quality of a modular barn is the same, if not better, than a stick-built barn.

In this episode, Helena welcomes back her very first guest, Jill Siragusa, from Horizon Structures. They’re talking about the Monitor Barn design; what’s great about it, and what the process is like these days for getting one for your horses. Listen in!
