Equine Behavior Workshop

$200.00

Date: TBD, Spring 2026 | Windsor, SC

This workshop is delivered by a behavioral scientist affiliated with a top-tier vet school. Participants will gain practical insights into equine cognition and learning, behavioral analysis, and how to leverage natural horse behavior as the foundation for true training success.

This is NOT natural horsemanship.

Most equestrians lack a scientific understanding of learning theory, how the equine brain works, and how to combine the two in order to get a horse that’s cooperative, a good learner, and a confident athlete. In fact, many traditional training methods are actually counterproductive to learning and performance in horses. This workshop will help you unpack the “why does he do that?” question, answer it from a behavioral science perspective, and provide you with simple tools to help your horses function better in the ring and around the barn.

Description

The workshop will focus on four key areas of training horses, donkeys, and mules from a behavioral science lens:

  1. How horses learn – understanding the neuroscience of the equine brain
  2. Teaching horses new skills and behaviors with operant conditioning
  3. Training (refinement of skills through a curated reinforcement history)
  4. Managing behavior (counter-conditioning undesired behaviors, reinforcing positive ones)
  5. Horse–human relationship (develop trust, confidence, and relaxation without sacrificing athletic energy)

Demonstration and hands-on participation in training strategies for ground work and cooperative veterinary care.

Lots of Q&A! This is a discussion-based workshop that will focus on your specific cases, questions, and concerns.
